I will also make use of Hogg, Tanis and Zimmerman's "Probability and Statistical Inference" and Zacks's "Examples and Problems in Mathematical Statistics" for additional problems and material, but all necessary material outside of the Panaretos text will be made available to students on Canvas.

Course grading scheme:

The course grading will be based on the following scheme:

  • Homework: 25%
  • 3 Midterm Exams (in class): 15% each
  • Final Exam (in class): 30%

Homework will not be collected, and the homework grade will instead be assessed by quizzes featuring the homework problems each Friday that we do not have an exam. The lowest two quiz scores will be dropped

 

Course prerequisites:

MATH 3031 (Probability Theory I) or equivalent

Course goals:

The course aims to help students develop a mathematically rigorous foundation for statistical inference. Students will build their skillset analyzing and making sense of datasets, stressing applications across physical and social sciences, medicine, engineering, finance, marketing, insurance, sports, etc. Students will also develop their skills in mathematical and statistical reasoning and writing, both as individuals and as a team, as well as honing their critical thinking and problem solving skills

Topics covered:

Regular probability models; sampling from probability distributions; point estimation of model parameters; tests of hypotheses for model parameters; confidence intervals for model parameters

Exam dates:

Midterm 1 (tentative): in class, 2/13. Midterm 2 (tentative): in class, 3/20. Midterm 3 (tentative): in class, 4/25. Final Exam: Friday 5/1, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Attendance is strongly encouraged, since a critical aspect of your learning is engaging with the class. Much of the course design will be active, and a fundamental learning goal of the course is learning to engage with the material with your peers

AI Policy:

The use of generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, etc.) is not permitted in this class unless specifically announced for a particular assignment; therefore, any use of AI tools for work in this class may be considered a violation of Temple University's Academic Honesty policy and Student Conduct Code, since the work is not your own. The use of unauthorized AI tools will result in a grade of zero on the assignment; a second offense will be reported to the Student Conduct Board.

Incomplete Policy:

The grade "I" (an "incomplete") is only given if students cannot complete the course work due to circumstances beyond their control. It is necessary for the student to have completed the majority of the course work with a passing average and to sign an incomplete contract which clearly states what is left for the student to do and the deadline by which the work must be completed. The incomplete contract must also include a default grade that will be used in case the "I" grade is not resolved by the agreed deadline.
