Stewart/Redlin/Watson's Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus, 8th edition, and Enhanced WebAssign, Cengage Learning. Students have the following options for purchasing access to the text: (1) Students may purchase Cengage Unlimited, allowing for access to multiple Cengage products including the e-Book and WebAssign for this course for either a single semester or the entire school year; (2) students may purchase WebAssign and e-Book access; or (3) students may purchase a physical copy of the book either with or without WebAssign access. Students may also obtain a used copy of the book, but it MUST be the correct edition.
Course grading scheme:
Written Homework: 6%; Weekly Quizzes: 12%; Tests 1 and 2: 25% each; Cumulative Final: 32%. Letter Grades: 93-100 A, 90-92 A-, 87-89 B+, 83-86 B, 80-82 B-, 77-79 C+, 73-76 C, 70-72 C-, 65-69 D+, 55-64 D, 50-54 D-, 0-49 F. Course prerequisites:
Mathematics placement, grade of C or better in Math 1021 or transfer credit for Math 1021.
Course goals:
Prepare students for Calculus.
Topics covered:
Topics include functions and function operations, one-to-one and inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic functions and equations, trigonometric functions and equations, inverse trigonometric functions, and basic trigonometric identities. The course also contains a brief review of algebra.
Exam dates:
Regular Quizzes - dates and material set by instructor; Common Midterms: Test 1: Friday, May 30; Test 2: Tuesday, June 17; Final Exam: Thursday, June 26.
Attendance policy:
Learning math can be challenging at times and is best done in an interactive environment. Attendance in class is therefore required. You will be allowed no more than 4 unexcused absences during the semester. You will be penalized one grade notch (e.g. from B to B-) for your fifth absence, and one grade notch for each increment of 4 classes that you miss from that point forward. Any time you are absent, be sure to check Canvas and also email one of your classmates to see what you missed.
Technology Specifications for this Course:
Students will need a device to scan and upload a multipage pdf to Canvas for homework assignments. Absolutely no technology or anything connected to the internet is permitted to be on a student's person during quizzes and exams. Incomplete Policy:
The grade "I" (an "incomplete") is only given if students cannot complete the course work due to circumstances beyond their control. It is necessary for the student to have completed the majority of the course work with a passing average and to sign an incomplete contract which clearly states what is left for the student to do and the deadline by which the work must be completed. Algebra Review:
A set of Beginning of Semester Algebra Review Problems has been provided via Canvas. You should review these problems to be sure you are comfortable with the content prior to taking this course. A four-credit math course in summer is already a time-consuming venture, and students must have strong algebra skills in order to be successful as there is simply not time to relearn algebra while also learning the course content, so please consider this carefully! You can always talk to your professor about this if you would like some guidance!
Make Up Policy:

In the case of a DOCUMENTED EMERGENCY that prevents a student from taking a test as scheduled, the student must contact their instructor and Dr. Babcock (jbbabcock@temple.edu) immediately, and no more than 24 hours after the test, to discuss alternative arrangements. There are very few situations, perhaps none, in which someone is expected to be an expert in material immediately after learning it. This is especially true of math. Completing homework is an opportunity for practice, and mistakes are absolutely expected and are indeed valuable learning experiences!
