Course grading scheme:

Tentative: Your grade will be based on two in-class tests, a cumulative final, homework and quizzes. The course grade will be computed as follows (tentative): 2 Midterms - 40%, Final - 35%, Homework 8% and Quizzes 17%.

Course prerequisites:

Math 1031: Differential and Integral Calculus, or its equivalent.

Course goals:

To provide students with the basic principles of statistical reasoning and the underlying concepts from probability theory.

Topics covered:

Descriptive Statistics, Counting Methods, Basic Probability, Conditional Probability and Independence, Random Variables, Binomial and Normal Distributions (including the central limit theorem), Sampling Distributions, Confidence Intervals, Hypotheses Tests.

Exam dates:

Test 1 - will be announced; Test 2 - will be announced; Cumulative Final Exam--Friday, May 5, 8:00 - 10:00 AM.

Attendance policy:

Class Attendance is required. Being on time is critical for a 50 minutes class ! Accumulation of missing several minutes of lectures does harm over time. If you miss more than three classes without a valid excuse, your course grade will be dropped one notch, e.g., from B to B-. Missing more than 6 classes will result in a two notch drop in your grade, and so on.

Technology Specifications for this Course:
Students will need a device to scan and upload a multipage pdf to Canvas for the homework assignments and possibly some quizzes. A scientific calculator is needed to do all assignments including quizzes and exams. Graphic and other more advanced calculators are NOT allowed in all assignments including quizzes and exams.

AI Policy:

The use of generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, etc.) is not permitted in this class unless specifically announced for a particular assignment; therefore, any use of AI tools for work in this class may be considered a violation of Temple University's Academic Honesty policy and Student Conduct Code, since the work is not your own. The use of unauthorized AI tools will result in a grade of zero on the assignment; a second offense will be reported to the Student Conduct Board.

Quizzes:

There will be a 15-25 min. quiz every one or two weeks. The grading of the quizzes is based on work. When you do homework, practice including full work. There will be no make up quizzes. The lowest quiz score will be dropped at the end of the semester.

Homework Assignments:

Written Homework will be collected weekly on Canvas. Late HW submission will NOT be accepted by ANY reasons. Collected HWs will count for 8% of your course grade. A list of assigned homework problems for each section of the textbook is posted on Canvas weekly. 


 

Exam Security Policy:

Under no circumstances is the use of personal electronic devices such as phones, computers, smart watches allowed during exams except a scientific calculator. All such items must be stowed away and out of sight for the duration of the exam. Any student found with such a device (except the scientific calculator) during an exam will not be allowed to complete the test, will receive a score of zero for the test, and will be reported to the Student Code of Conduct Board.
