Prerequisites: Math 1042 with a grade of C or better or an equivalent transfer.
Course Materials: A First Course in Differential Equations with Modeling Applications, 11E, by Dennis G. Zill. You will need WebAssign access for the homework. DO NOT buy a used book. Go to https://www.cengage.com, sign-in, and use the class key for 2 weeks free access. Then you will need the access key. 4-month access to Cengage Unlimited.
Course Goals: To help prepare students learn basic concepts, techniques, and applications of ordinary differential equations.
Topics Covered: First order differential equations, second and higher order linear differential equations, Laplace transforms, system of first order equations.
Course Grading: Your course grade will be computed according to the following scheme: Recitation Attendance: 2%, Lecture Attendance: 1%, Homework assigned on WA - 8%, Quiz Average - 11%, Exam 1 - 24%, Exam 2 - 24%, Final Exam - 30%.
Exam Dates: We will have two common midterms: Test 1: Tuesday October 1; Test 2: Thursday, November 7, and the comprehensive common Final Exam: Thursday, December 12, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Both the midterms and the final are scheduled in Beury Hall 166, the lecture hall.
Attendance Policy: Attendance is required in both the lectures and the recitations. Failure to attend will affect your course average. If you miss a recitation or a lecture for a valid, documented reason and email me promptly about this, then you absence will be excused.
Attendance and Your Health: To achieve course learning goals, students must attend and participate in classes, according to your instructors' requirements. However, if you feel unwell or if you are under quarantine or in isolation because you have been exposed to the virus or tested positive for it, you should not come to campus or attend in-person classes or activities. Students have the responsibility to contact their instructors to create a plan for participation and engagement in the course as soon as they are able to do so and to make a plan to complete all assignments in a timely fashion when illness delays their completion.
Homework: Homework will be regularly assigned from the textbook. A part of that assigned homework you will do using the WA (WebAssign). It will be graded by the computer. Your result for the WA part of the homework will be counted as 6% of your Course Average.
Quizzes: There will be a 20-25 min. weekly quiz. Quizzes will be based on the assigned homework. There will be no make up quizzes.
Make Up Policy: There will be NO MAKE UP exams except in the case of a DOCUMENTED EMERGENCY, like an illness or an accident. The documents confirming the emergency (from a hospital or police) must be provided. If you miss an exam, you must contact me by e-mail as soon as possible, preferably before the test.
Calculator Policy: No calculators will be allowed on any exams or quizzes. Student should solve most homework problems without using a calculator.
Letter Grades: 93-100 A, 90-92 A-, 87-89 B+, 83-86 B, 80-82 B-, 77-79 C+, 73-76 C, 65-72 C-, 55-64 D, 0-55 F.
Electronic Devices Policy: All electronic devices must be turned off and put away for the duration of the class unless otherwise specified in class.
Exam Security Policy: We have a zero tolerance policy for cheating on the tests. Any student caught cheating will receive a score of 0 on the test and will be reported to the Student Code of Conduct Board. All electronic devices such as cell phones, computers, or smart watches items must be turned off and stowed away and out of sight for the duration of the exam. Any student found with such a device during an exam will not be allowed to complete the test and will receive a score of 0 for the test, and will be reported to the Student Code of Conduct Board. In addition, under no circumstances, will students be allowed to bring in any kind of papers for use during the exam. Should a student need extra paper during a test, he/she should ask the instructor to provide it. Any student found using papers that they themselves brought into the exam will not be allowed to complete the exam and will receive a score of 0 for the test.

Add/Drop Policy: Students will be charged for a course unless dropped by the Drop/Add deadline date. Check the University calendar (opens in new tab/window) for exact dates.
During the Drop/Add period, students may drop a course with no record of the class appearing on their transcript. Students are not financially responsible for any courses dropped during this period. In the following weeks prior to or on the withdrawal date students may withdraw from a course with the grade of "W" appearing on their transcript. AI Policy: The use of generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, etc.) is not permitted in this class unless specifically announced for a particular assignment; therefore, any use of AI tools for work in this class may be considered a violation of Temple University's Academic Honesty policy and Student Conduct Code, since the work is not your own. The use of unauthorized AI tools will result in a grade of zero on the assignment; a second offense will be reported to the Student Conduct Board.
Incomplete Policy: The grade "I" (an "incomplete") is only given if students cannot complete the course work due to circumstances beyond their control. It is necessary for the student to have completed the majority of the course work with a passing average and to sign an incomplete contract which clearly states what is left for the student to do and the deadline by which the work must be completed. The incomplete contract must also include a default grade that will be used in case the "I" grade is not resolved by the agreed deadline.
