Course: Mathematics 0701.011.

Course Title: Elementary Algebra.

Time: TR 13:30-15:10.

Prerequisites: Placement exam.

Textbook: MyMathLab for Foundations of Mathematical Reasoning, Charles A. Dana Center.

Course Goals: Students will apply concepts of numeracy to investigate and describe quantitive relationships and solve real-world problems in a variety of contexts. To critically evaluate statements that appear in the media involving risk and arguments based on probability, ratios, rates, proportions, and scaling. To be able to critically evaluate quantitative information presented and judge it's usefulness.

Topics Covered: Topics include: numeracy with an emphasis on estimation and fluency with large numbers; evaluating expressions and formulas; rates, ratios, and proportions; percentages; solving equations; linear models; data interpretations including graphs and tables; verbal, algebraic and graphical represientations of functions; exponential models.

Course Grading: Homework: 15%, Tests 1,2,3 and 4: 15 % each of three highest of the four; Final Exam: 30%, Attendance: 10%.

Exam Dates: Common Final Exam: TR classes: Test 1: Tues, 2/5; Test 2: Thurs, 2/28; Test 3: Thurs, 3/28; Test 4: Tues, 4/23; Common Final Exam: Thurs, 5/2, 3:30 - 5:30.

Attendance Policy: Attendance is mandatory as most of the class is done in groups and your participation is needed. More than four absences might result in a grade drop. Attendance counts as 10% of grade.

Attendance Policy: Students get a grade of 100 for 0 to 4 absences. 4 points will be deducted for every absence after 4. So 5 absences is a grade of 96, 6 absences is a grade of 92, etc.

Homework: It is very IMPORTANT that you keep up with the deadlines for online Home-work.Note that Home-Work is 15% of your grade.Should you miss a class, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make up the missed lesson . FOLLOW SYLLABUS FOR SCHEDULE . No extensions will be given on homework if you are absent . Once you are enrolled in the Home-Work program ...you will see all the deadlines whether or not you are present in class and you will not get a reminder from me about due dates. IT IS ENTIRELY YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to complete your home-work in a timely manner. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ACCESS YOUR HOMEWORK all SEMESTER LONG until May2. However, after the deadline has passed you will have a 10% PENALTY.

In the following weeks prior to or on the withdrawal date students may withdraw from a course with the grade of "W" appearing on their transcript. The grade "I" (an "incomplete") is only given if students cannot complete the course work due to circumstances beyond their control. It is necessary for the student to have completed the majority of the course work with a passing average and to sign an incomplete contract which clearly states what is left for the student to do and the deadline by which the work must be completed.
