Course: Mathematics 0701.003.

Course Title: Elementary Algebra.

Time: MWF 13:20-14:30.

Textbook: MyMathLab for Foundations of Mathematical Reasoning, Charles A. Dana Center.

Course Goals: Students will apply concepts of numeracy to investigate and describe quantitive relationships and solve real-world problems in a variety of contexts. To critically evaluate statements that appear in the media involving risk and arguments based on probability, ratios, rates, proportions, and scaling. To be able to critically evaluate quantitative information presented and judge it's usefulness.

Topics Covered: Topics include: numeracy with an emphasis on estimation and fluency with large numbers; evaluating expressions and formulas; rates, ratios, and proportions; percentages; solving equations; linear models; data interpretations including graphs and tables; verbal, algebraic and graphical representations of functions; exponential models.

Course Grading: Homework: 15%, Tests 1,2,3 and 4: 15 % each of three highest of the four; Final Exam: 30%, Attendance: 10%.

Exam Dates: Test 1: Mon, 2/4; Test 2: Wed, 2/27; Test 3: Fri 3/29: Test 4: Fri 4/26; Common Final Exam: Thurs, 5/2 3:30-5:30.

Attendance Policy: Attendance is mandatory as most of the class is done in groups and your participation is needed. More than four absences might result in a grade drop. Attendance counts as 10% of grade. A test can be made up with a valid justification only and within a week of the scheduled exam.

Exam Security Policy: Under no circumstances is the use of personal electronic devices such as phones, computers, or smart watches allowed during exams. All such items must be stowed away and out of sight for the duration of the exam. Any student found with such a device during an exam will not be allowed to complete the test, will receive a score of zero for the test, and will be reported to the Student Code of Conduct Board. In addition, under no circumstances, will students be allowed to bring in any kind of papers for use during the exam. Should a student need extra paper during a test, the proctor will provide it. Any student found using papers that they themselves brought into the exam will not be allowed to complete the test, will receive a score of zero for the test, and will be reported to the Student Code of Conduct Board.

Students will be charged for a course unless dropped by the Drop/Add deadline date. Check the University calendar for exact dates.

During the Drop/Add period, students may drop a course with no record of the class appearing on their transcript. Students are not financially responsible for any courses dropped during this period. In the following weeks prior to or on the withdrawal date students may withdraw from a course with the grade of "W" appearing on their transcript. The grade "I" (an "incomplete") is only given if students cannot complete the course work due to circumstances beyond their control. It is necessary for the student to have completed the majority of the course work with a passing average and to sign an incomplete contract which clearly states what is left for the student to do and the deadline by which the work must be completed. The incomplete contract must also include a default grade that will be used in case the "I" grade is not resolved by the agreed deadline. See the full policy by clicking here.
