Course Title: Probability Theory I.

Time: MWF 3:00-3:50.

Place: Wachman 10.

Instructor: John J. Schiller.

Instructor Office: Wachman 606.

Prerequisites: MATH 1042 | Minimum Grade of C | May not be taken concurrently, or MATH 1942 | Minimum Grade of C | May not be taken concurrently, or MATH 1951 | Minimum Grade of C | May not be taken concurrently, or MATH 2043 | Minimum Grade of C- | May be taken concurrently, or MA07 Y | May not be taken concurrently, or MATW Y | May not be taken concurrently.

Textbook: Introduction to Probability by Anderson, Seppalainen, and Valko, Cambridge University Press.

Course Goals: To introduce the basic concepts of calculus-based probability and prepare students for more advanced probability.

Topics Covered: Sample spaces and probabilities, conditional probability and independence, random variables, moment generating functions, joint distributions, law of large numbers, central limit theorem, and (if time permits) conditional distributions.

Course Grading: The grade is based on six quizzes, two tests, and a comprehensive final exam. The quizzes count 10%. If the final exam grade is lower than the grades on the two tests, then the lower test grade counts 20%, the other test 30%, and the final exam 40%. Otherwise, the lower test score counts 10%, the other test 30%, and the final 50%.

Exam Dates: Tentative dates: Quiz 1 Fri. Sept. 6, Q2, Fri. Sept. 20, Test 1 Fri. Sept. 27, Q3 Fri. Oct. 11, Q4 Fri. Oct. 25, T2 Fri. Nov. 1, Q5 Fri. Nov. 15, Q6 Fri. Dec. 6, Final Exam Wed. Dec. 18, 1:00-3:00.

Attendance Policy: Attendance and participation in class are expected and will be factors in determining grades in borderline cases.

Any student who has a need for accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact me privately to discuss the specific situation as soon as possible. Contact Disability Resources and Services at (215) 204-1280, 100 Ritter Annex, to coordinate reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities.

Freedom to teach and freedom to learn are inseparable facets of academic freedom. The University has adopted a policy on Student and Faculty Academic Rights and Responsibilities (Policy # 03.70.02) which can be accessed here.

Students will be charged for a course unless dropped by the Drop/Add deadline date. Check the University calendar for exact dates.

During the Drop/Add period, students may drop a course with no record of the class appearing on their transcript. Students are not financially responsible for any courses dropped during this period. In the following weeks prior to or on the withdrawal date students may withdraw from a course with the grade of "W" appearing on their transcript. After the withdrawal date students may not withdraw from courses. Check the University Calendar (Opens in new tab/window) for exact dates. See the full policy by clicking here. The grade "I" (an "incomplete") is only given if students cannot complete the course work due to circumstances beyond their control. It is necessary for the student to have completed the majority of the course work with a passing average and to sign an incomplete contract which clearly states what is left for the student to do and the deadline by which the work must be completed. The incomplete contract must also include a default grade that will be used in case the "I" grade is not resolved by the agreed deadline. See the full policy by clicking here.
