Textbook: The Basic Practice of Statistics, 8th edition, David S. Moore. The textbook (either a hard copy or an ebook) is required. We will occasionally use online resources associated with the textbook at https://www.macmillanlearning.com/bps8e.
Course Goals: Students should gain a basic understanding of statistics and be able to apply this knowledge to statistical analyses related to their individual disciplines.
Topics Covered: We will discuss the basics of descriptive and inferential statistics, including data analysis, sampling, probability, inference, and other topics as time permits.
Course Grading: Homework: 10%, In-Class Exams: 60%, Cumulative Final Exam: 30%. I will replace your lowest in-class exam score with your homework score if your homework score is higher.
Exam Dates: The three in-class exams are tentatively scheduled for September 19th, October 17th, and November 14th. The final exam is on Tuesday, December 17th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.
Attendance Policy: Attendance in class is expected. If you miss a day of class it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and review the missed material outside of class. You are accountable for knowing material that was covered in class regardless of whether you were present in class.
Homework: I will assign homework each week. Typically homework will be assigned on Thursday and due the following Tuesday. Homework can be turned in at the start of class, or in my mailbox in Wachman 638 by 4:30 pm. Late homeworks will be worth 80% credit if I receive them within 48 hours (that is, by 4:30 pm two days after the due date). Homeworks received more than 48 hours late will get no credit. I will drop your lowest homework score at the end of the semester.
Calculators: You may use a scientific calculator for homework and tests. You must bring your own calculator to tests. You may not use a graphing calculator or any internet-connected device such as a cell phone, smart watch, tablet, or computer during a test. Please see me before the first test if you want to confirm that your calculator is allowed.
Exam Make-Up Policy: Make up exams will only be given only in cases of documented emergencies (sickness, car accident, a death in the family, etc.) It is the your responsibility to contact me as soon as possible, preferably by e-mail, in the case of a missed exam. All make-up exams must be taken before the following class day. If you know in advance that you cannot be in class on an exam day for a non-emergency reason, such as an academic conference or a religious holiday, you may be able to schedule an alternative exam date BEFORE the regular in-class exam. In such situations, you must contact me at least one week before the missed exam to make arrangements.
Canvas: This class uses the Canvas learning management system. Please check Canvas regularly for important announcements and course documents.
Academic Support: The Student Success Center (SSC) and the Math TA and CA Consulting Center (MCC) both provide excellent support services for this course throughout the semester. Students will be charged for a course unless dropped by the Drop/Add deadline date. Check the University calendar for exact dates.
During the Drop/Add period, students may drop a course with no record of the class appearing on their transcript. Students are not financially responsible for any courses dropped during this period. In the following weeks prior to or on the withdrawal date students may withdraw from a course with the grade of "W" appearing on their transcript. The grade "I" (an "incomplete") is only given if students cannot complete the course work due to circumstances beyond their control. It is necessary for the student to have completed the majority of the course work with a passing average and to sign an incomplete contract which clearly states what is left for the student to do and the deadline by which the work must be completed. The incomplete contract must also include a default grade that will be used in case the "I" grade is not resolved by the agreed deadline. See the full policy by clicking here.
