Prerequisites: Mathematics placement, grade of C or better in Math 1021 or transfer credit for Math 1021.
Textbook: Stewart/Redlin/Watson's Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus, 7th edition, and Enhanced WebAssign, Cengage Learning. You can purchase a standalone WebAssign Instant Access and use the electronic version of the textbook (eBook) for \$98; or you can purchase the ePack that contains both the paper textbook and the WebAssign Instant Access for \$120. Please DO NOT buy any EARLIER edition of this book. Please note that used books DO NOT allow access to WebAssign or the eBook as these codes are NOT transferable.
Course Goals: Prepare students for Calculus.
Topics Covered: Topics include functions and function operations, one-to-one and inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic functions and equations, trigonometric functions and equations, inverse trigonometric functions, and basic trigonometric identities. The course also contains a brief review of algebra.
Course Grading: Review Quiz: 2%; Weekly Quizzes: 15%; Tests 1 and 2: 25% each; Cumulative Final: 33%.
Exam Dates: Review Quiz - Friday, June 29; Weekly Quizzes - dates and material set by instructor; Common Midterms: Test 1: Friday, July 13; Test 2: Tuesday, July 31; Final (cumulative) - Wednesday, August 8.
Attendance Policy: Attendance in class is required. You will be allowed 4 unexcused absences during the semester. You will be penalized one grade notch (e.g. from B to B-) for your fifth absence and one grade notch for each increment of 4 classes, or a portion thereof, that you miss from that point forward. Failure to attend class on quiz dates will also affect your Quiz Average.
Review Quiz: There is an in-class Review Quiz scheduled on Friday, June 29. This quiz contains basic algebra material you should have had before. If you have difficulty with this review material, it indicates that you do not have enough background to continue in Math 1022 and you may want to take Math 1021. During the first few days of the semester, the Math Department can help you switch from Math 1022 to Math 1021. If you wish to do this, please contact Dr. Boris Datskovsky at bdats@temple.edu.
Homework Assignments: A list of assigned homework problems for each section will be provided. These are the problems assigned from the textbook. On this list, you will see several problems from each section that are written in bold and italicized font. These problems are also available on WebAssign, which provides instantaneous feedback as well as tutorials and other support resources.
Make Up Policy: QUIZZES: NO MAKEUPS WILL BE GIVEN. When computing your overall quiz average, the lowest two quiz scores will be dropped (If 8 quizzes or less are given, the lowest quiz score will be dropped). Missed quizzes will receive a score of zero and are to be counted among the dropped scores. TESTS: If an emergency arises and you cannot attend a test, you should contact me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to alert me to the situation so that we can make other arrangements. VERIFIABLE DOCUMENTATION OF THE EMERGENCY IS REQUIRED and any make-up test must be taken WITHIN ONE DAY of the exam date.
Review for Midterms: Review materials for each test and the final will be available on the Blackboard Course for review approximately one week prior to each test day. Questions on these reviews will contain homework problems. Please be aware that this review material may not be all-inclusive. Any problem similar to a sample problem or a homework problem may appear on the tests. Please note that you can certainly start reviewing for your exams PRIOR to the release of these materials, using your quizzes and assigned homework from the included sections.

Calculator Policy: Calculators will NOT be allowed for ANY test.
Letter Grades: 93-100 A, 90-92 A-, 87-89 B+, 83-86 B, 80-82 B-, 77-79 C+, 73-76 C, 70-72 C-, 65-69 D+, 55-64 D, 50-54 D-, 0-49 F. NOTE: A grade of C or better is needed to move onto Math 1041: Calculus I. A grade of C- or better is needed to move onto Math 1039: Calculus I with Lab.

The grade "I" (an "incomplete") is only given if students cannot complete the course work due to circumstances beyond their control. It is necessary for the student to have completed the majority of the course work with a passing average and to sign an incomplete contract which clearly states what is left for the student to do and the deadline by which the work must be completed. The incomplete contract must also include a default grade that will be used in case the "I" grade is not resolved by the agreed deadline. See the full policy by clicking here.
