Course: Mathematics 3044.001.

Course Title: Numerical Analysis II.

Time: TR 12:30 PM - 1:50 PM.

Prerequisites: Math 3043, Numerical Analysis I.

Textbook: An Introduction to Numerical Analysis, Endre Süli and David F. Mayers, Cambridge University Press, 1st Edition.

Course Goals: The course is designed to introduce students to the understanding, study and use of numerical techniques to solve problems arising in science and engineering. Students will also use MATLAB to solve programming assignments.

Topics Covered: We will discuss material related to the following topics as time permits: -Best approximation -Eigenvalues and eigenvectors -Initial value problems for ODEs -Boundary value problems for ODEs -Numerical methods for PDEs.

Course Grading: Homework - 30%, Test I - 20%, Test II - 20%, Final - 30%.

Exam Dates: Test I: TBD, Test II: TBD, Final: Thursday 3rd May 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM.

Attendance Policy: Attendance is required.

Letter Grades: 0-49 F, 50-54 D-, 55-64 D, 65-69 D+, 70-72 C-, 73-76 C, 77-79 C+, 80-82 B-, 83-86 B, 87-89 B+, 90-92 A-, 93-100 A.

Computational Devices: We will have assignments that will use MATLAB as the software platform. You must ensure to have access to a computer, the internet, and the software package MATLAB to work on certain homework problems. You are expected to be proficient in using MATLAB for certain types of computations and constructing m-files. MATLAB is available at the Computer Services Download Sites.

Policies: Late work is unacceptable. No make-ups. No cell phones, No texting, No ear buds/head phones, ETC. in class.

Homework: "Naked numbers are not acceptable." Solutions must include a short write-up describing the problem, your solution technique, and procedural details. To include a computer print out use the cut & paste method for placement of materials in your work. All things must be clearly labeled with your name and the problem number or statement. Hand written work must include the steps for solution presented in a neat orderly fashion and in a fairly large size.

Class Etiquette: All cell phones are to be turned OFF and kept in your backpack or pocket. Do not have them on the desk. NO CELL PHONE USE OR TEXTING PERMITTED IN CLASS.

Canvas: It is a registered Canvas course. Please go there regularly to see assignments and important announcements.

The grade "I" (an "incomplete") is only given if students cannot complete the course work due to circumstances beyond their control. It is necessary for the student to have completed the majority of the course work with a passing average and to sign an incomplete contract which clearly states what is left for the student to do and the deadline by which the work must be completed.
