Textbook: No textbook, material will be provided.
Course Goals: To provide students with a bridge from basic math courses up through Calculus III, where the emphasis is primarily on techniques, to advanced math courses, where the emphasis is primarily on proofs of theorems.
Topics Covered: Material will be selected from the following topics: decimal and base-r expansions of rational numbers, mathematical induction and the Fibonacci sequence, insolvability of the quintic equation leading to groups, rings, and fields, the road to the fundamental theorem of calculus, complex analysis.
Course Grading: The grade is based on six quizzes, two tests, and a comprehensive final exam. The quizzes count 10%, the lower of the two tests 20%, the higher 30%, and the final exam 40%. Smart phones may not be used in quizzes, tests, and the final exam.
Exam Dates: Tentative quiz and test dates: Q1-week 2, Q2-wk 4, T1-wk 5, Q3-wk 7, Q4-wk 9, T2-wk 10, Q5-wk 12, Q6-wk 14. The final exam is scheduled for Friday, May 4, 10:30-12:30.
Attendance Policy: Attendance and participation in class are expected and will be factors in determining grades in borderline cases.

In the following weeks prior to or on the withdrawal date students may withdraw from a course with the grade of "W" appearing on their transcript. The grade "I" (an "incomplete") is only given if students cannot complete the course work due to circumstances beyond their control. It is necessary for the student to have completed the majority of the course work with a passing average and to sign an incomplete contract which clearly states what is left for the student to do and the deadline by which the work must be completed.
