Prerequisites: Mathematics placement, grade of C or better in Math 1021 or transfer credit for Math 1021.
Textbook: Stewart/Redlin/Watson's Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus, 7th edition, and Enhanced WebAssign, Cengage Learning. Important: together with the textbook you need to have access to WebAssign because part of your homework will be assigned there. You can purchase a standalone WebAssign Instant Access and use the electronic version of the textbook (eBook) for \$98; or you can purchase the ePack that contains both the paper textbook and the WebAssign Instant Access for \$120. Please DO NOT buy any EARLIER edition of this book. Please also DO NOT buy any used books since they will not let you access WebAssign (the WebAssign codes ARE NOT transferable).
Course Goals: Prepare students for Calculus.
Topics Covered: Topics include functions and function operations, one-to-one and inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic functions and equations, trigonometric functions and equations, inverse trigonometric functions, and basic trigonometric identities. The course also contains a brief review of algebra.
Course Grading: Review Quiz: 2%; WebAssign Homework: 4%; Weekly Quizzes: 10%; Tests 1 and 2: 25% each; Cumulative Final: 34%.
Exam Dates: Review Quiz - Thursday, January 18/Friday, January 19; Weekly Quizzes - dates and material set by instructor; Common Midterms: Test 1: Tuesday EVENING, February 20, 5:50-7:20pm, room to be announced; Test 2: Tuesday EVENING, April 10, 5:50-7:20pm, room to be announced; Common Final - Thursday, May 3, 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., room to be announced. BE AWARE THAT THE FINAL IS SCHEDULED AT A SPECIAL TIME OUTSIDE OF THE FINAL EXAM MATRIX.
Attendance Policy: Attendance in class is required. For classes that meet two times a week, you will be allowed 4 unexcused absences during the semester; 6 for those sections that meet three times a week. You will be penalized one grade notch (e.g. from B to B-) for your fifth (or seventh) absence and one grade notch for each increment of 4 (or 6) classes or a portion thereof that you miss from that point forward. Failure to attend class during quiz dates will also affect your Quiz Average.
Review Quiz: There is an in-class Review Quiz scheduled on the second day of class. This quiz contains basic algebra material you should have had before. If you have difficulty with this review material, it indicates that you do not have enough background to continue in Math 1022 and you may want to take Math 1021. During the first few days of the semester, the Math Department can help you switch from Math 1022 to Math 1021. If you wish to do this, please contact Dr. Boris Datskovsky at bdats@temple.edu. Students who earn a grade indicating their algebra is not strong enough to continue in Math 1022 but do not choose to take Math 1021 will be REQUIRED to complete an additional Algebra assignment to remediate these skills.
Homework Assignments: The Blackboard course, Math 1022 - Precalculus - Spring 2018, contains the list of assigned homework problems for each section. These are the problems assigned from the textbook. On this list, you will see several problems from each section that are written in bold and italicized font. These problems are assigned on WebAssign and must be completed by the due dates listed in WebAssign. Extensions will NOT be granted for WebAssign problems.
Make Up Policy: INSTRUCTOR'S MAKE-UP POLICY ON QUIZZES FOR THIS SECTION ONLY. Missed quizzes CANNOT be made up. Instead, at least one quiz (your lowest score) will be dropped (misses quizzes will be score as ZERO). TEST MAKE UP POLICY (DEPARTMENTAL) If an emergency arises and you cannot attend a test, you should contact me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to alert me to the situation so that we can make other arrangements. VERIFIABLE DOCUMENTATION OF THE EMERGENCY IS REQUIRED and any make-up test must be taken WITHIN TWO DAYS of the exam date.
Review for Midterms: Review materials for each test and the final will be available on the course Blackboard for review approximately one week prior to each test day. Questions on these reviews will contain homework problems. Please be aware that this review material may not be all-inclusive. Any problem similar to a sample problem or a homework problem may appear on the tests. Please note that you can certainly start reviewing for your exams PRIOR to the release of these materials, using your quizzes and assigned homework from the included sections.
Peer-Assisted Study Sessions: In addition to STEM tutoring for this course, the Student Success Center will offer Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) for this course. During weekly PASS sessions, you can work with a trained peer leader and your fellow classmates to practice and explore course content together. During STEM tutoring sessions, you can work one-on-one with a tutor to review and understand the concepts in this course. Academic Support: The Student Success Center (SSC) and the Math TA and CA Consulting Center (MCC) both provide excellent support services for this course throughout the semester. Calculator Policy: Calculators will NOT be allowed for ANY test.
Letter Grades: 93-100 A, 90-92 A-, 87-89 B+, 83-86 B, 80-82 B-, 77-79 C+, 73-76 C, 70-72 C-, 65-69 D+, 55-64 D, 50-54 D-, 0-49 F. NOTE: A grade of C or better is needed to move onto Math 1041: Calculus I. A grade of C- or better is needed to move onto Math 1039: Calculus I with Lab.

In the following weeks prior to or on the withdrawal date students may withdraw from a course with the grade of "W" appearing on their transcript. The grade "I" (an "incomplete") is only given if students cannot complete the course work due to circumstances beyond their control. It is necessary for the student to have completed the majority of the course work with a passing average and to sign an incomplete contract which clearly states what is left for the student to do and the deadline by which the work must be completed. The incomplete contract must also include a default grade that will be used in case the "I" grade is not resolved by the agreed deadline. See the full policy by clicking here.
