Prerequisites: A math placement test score of 9-14-9 or higher, a grade of C or higher in Math 1022 (C074), or transfer credit for Math 1022 (C074).
Textbook: Textbook: James Stewart: Calculus: Early Transcendentals ; 7th Edition, Brooks/Cole. Important: in addition to the printed textbook you need to have access to WebAssign because part of your homework will be assigned there. Please DO NOT buy any used books since they will not let you access WebAssign (the WebAssign codes ARE NOT transferable).
Course Goals: To learn the concepts and techniques and applications of differential calculus.
Topics Covered: Limits and continuity, differentiation, linear approximation and Taylor polynomials, application of derivatives to optimization and graphing, and antiderivatives.
Course Grading: Review Quiz: 2%, Quiz on Derivatives: 2%, Online Homework: 4%, Quizzes: 10%, Test 1: 24%, Test 2: 24%, Comprehensive Final Exam: 34%.
Exam Dates: Test 1 - Tuesday, February 17, (5:50 - 7:20 pm); Test 2 - Tuesday, April 7, (5:50 - 7:20 pm); Final Exam - Thursday, April 30, (3:30 - 5:30 pm). Exam rooms will be announced at least one week in advance of the exam.
Attendance Policy: Attendance in every class is required. Students who miss more than 6 classes without an excuse will have their grades lowered by one notch (e.g., from B to B-) for every increment of 6 classes or a portion thereof that is missed.
Final Exam: Final Exam - Thursday, April 30, (3:30 - 5:30 pm). Exam rooms will be announced at least one week in advance of the exam. Important: please note that if you miss the final exam and do not make alternative arrangements before the grades are turned in, your grade for the course will be F.
Common Quizzes: (1)A Review Quiz will be given in class on Wednesday (1/14/2015) the second day of class. It will be based on precalculus material and its result will be counted as 2% of the grade for the course. Students who perform poorly on the Review Quiz may be moved to Math 1022, Precalculus. (2)Quiz on Derivatives will be given during the 8th or 9th week of the semester. Its result will be counted as 2% of the grade for the course.
Importance of Study Groups: Mathematicians often meet to discuss their work and their latest problems and solutions with each other. Such discussions are instrumental in helping them to develop their skills and gain new insights. These discussions are an important part of the learning process and I recommend that you try this collaborative technique. I suggest you form study groups of three or four students and meet regularly (possibly in the MSRC) to discuss the homework problems and class material. And if you think you really understand the course material try teaching it to the others in your group. The best way to really learn a subject is to teach it to someone else. Note: Please inform me of the members of your study group and this will count as class participation.
Homework: A list of homework problems from the textbook will be distributed; a certain (specified) part of the homework assignments you will need to do on WebAssign. It is very important that you do ALL homework problems.
Quizzes: Weekly quizzes will be given consisting of 4-5 problems similar to the ones assigned from the textbook. There will be no make up quizzes. However, when computing your semester quiz average the lowest two quiz scores will be dropped. Missed quizzes will receive a score of zero and will be counted among the dropped scores. Occasional homework assignments may be graded and will be given the same weight as one quiz.
Calculator Policy: NO CALCULATORS will be allowed on any exams or in-class quizzes.
Make Up Policy: Make ups of exams will only be given in cases of DOCUMENTED EMERGENCIES (sickness, car accident, a death in the family, etc.) It is the student's responsibility to contact me RIGHT AWAY, preferably by e-mail, in the case of a missed exam. DOCUMENTATION OF EMERGENCY IS REQUIRED. ALL MAKE UPS MUST BE TAKEN WITHIN TWO DAYS OF THE TEST DATE.

Students will be charged for a course unless dropped by the Drop/Add deadline date given below.

During the first two weeks of the fall or spring semester or summer sessions, students may withdraw from a course with no record of the class appearing on the transcript. In weeks three through nine of the fall or spring semester, or during weeks three and four of summer sessions, the student may withdraw with the advisor's permission. The course will be recorded on the transcript with the instructor's notation of "W," indicating that the student withdrew. After week nine of the fall or spring semester, or week four of summer sessions, students may not withdraw from courses. No student may withdraw from more than five courses during the duration of his/her studies to earn a bachelor's degree. A student may not withdraw from the same course more than once. Students who miss the final exam and do not make alternative arrangements before the grades are turned in will be graded F.

The grade I (an "incomplete") is reserved for extreme circumstances. It is necessary to have completed almost all of the course with a passing average and to file an incomplete contract specifying what is left for you to do. To be eligible for an I grade you need a good reason and you should have missed not more than 25% of the first nine weeks of classes. If approved by the Mathematics Department chair and the CST Dean's office, the incomplete contract must include a default grade that will be used in case the I grade is not resolved within 12 months.
