Course Goals: Math 701 is an introductory algebra course that will help you develop skills that will be useful in all of your future mathematics courses. Developing good study habits is the key to success in any mathematics course. Allow yourself enough time to first study your notes and the material presented in the text and then to work through the homework. Anyone who is diligent throughout the course should be able to complete the course successfully. All you need is a willingness to work hard at developing your natural ability.
Topics Covered: The course will cover pre-Algebra and some Algebra topics.
Course Grading: There are three tests and a comprehensive final examination, the latter being administered during the final exam week. Here is how your final grade will be determined: Evaluation Percent of Final Grade Test 1 Test 2 Test 3 55* Quizzes 15 Final Exam 30 Total 100 *THE HIGHER TWO TEST SCORES WILL EACH BE WORTH 20% AND THE LOWEST SCORE 15% OF THE FINAL GRADE. At the end of the semester, you will receive a letter grade (A through F). Students in the College of Science and Technology will not receive credit for this course. You must pass Math 701 with a 73 (grade equivalent C) or higher to take Math 1021 (College Algebra), and a C- or higher to enter Math 702 or to continue on to a non Calculus-track math course. There will be 3 Tests worth 55%, Weekly quizzes worth 15% and a Final exam worth 30%.
Exam Dates: Test 1 is Sept 20th, Test 2 is October 18th, Test 3 is November 20th, Final December 10th.
Attendance Policy: Attendance is required. Attendance will be taken regularly beginning with the third week of the semester. Unexcused absences will affect your final grade according to the following schedule: Number of Unexcused Absences Penalty Example 5 Final grade lowered to next level B to B 7 Final grade lowered one more full grade B to C 9 F for the course.

Students will be charged for a course unless a withdrawal form is processed by a registration office of the University by the Drop/Add deadline date given below. For this semester, the crucial dates are as follows:
- The first day of classes is Monday, August 27.
- Labor Day is Monday, September 3.
- The last day to drop/add (tuition refund available) is Monday, September 10.
- Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 22.
- The last day to withdraw (no refund) is Tuesday, October 23.
- The last day of classes is Wednesday, December 5.
During the first two weeks of the fall or spring semester or summer sessions, students may withdraw from a course with no record of the class appearing on the transcript. In weeks three through nine of the fall or spring semester, or during weeks three and four of summer sessions, the student may withdraw with the advisor's permission. The course will be recorded on the transcript with the instructor's notation of "W," indicating that the student withdrew. After week nine of the fall or spring semester, or week four of summer sessions, students may not withdraw from courses. No student may withdraw from more than five courses during the duration of his/her studies to earn a bachelor's degree. A student may not withdraw from the same course more than once. Students who miss the final exam and do not make alternative arrangements before the grades are turned in will be graded F.
The grade I (an "incomplete") is reserved for extreme circumstances. It is necessary to have completed almost all of the course with a passing average and to file an incomplete contract specifying what is left for you to do. To be eligible for an I grade you need a good reason and you should have missed not more than 25% of the first nine weeks of classes. If approved by the Mathematics Department chair and the CST Dean's office, the incomplete contract must include a default grade that will be used in case the I grade is not resolved within 12 months.
