Abstract: Special cube complexes were introduced by Haglund and Wise. One of the most notable applications of this theory is Agol's proof of the Virtual Haken Conjecture. An important ingredient of the proof is the Haglund–Wise combination theorem, which gives criteria for when combining virtually special cube complexes preserves virtual specialness. However, the theorem is restricted to the hyperbolic setting. In this talk, I will discuss a new combination theorem that extends the result to a broader setting, including some non-hyperbolic and non-relatively hyperbolic examples.
