In search of a canonical basis for spaces of modular forms of fixed weight and level, we will discuss Hecke operators and Hecke eigenforms. We will then introduce the Hecke L-series of a normalized eigenform and prove its functional equation. We will conclude by discussing van der Blij's application of L-series to the representability of integers by binary quadratic forms of discriminant -23.
